Biographical / Historical:
John R. Beatty was born in Pennsylvania in 1831 and came to Mankato in 1857. In 1861, he enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, Minnesota Infantry. He made First Lieutenant, then Capitan, and served until 1865. He later made a name for himself in the stone and cement industry in Mankato. Laura Maxfield came to Mankato with her family in 1853 by steamboat. They married in 1864.
