Biographical / Historical:
The Mankato Commercial College was founded by J. R. Brandrup in 1891. From 1891-1980, the college operated in a variety of locations on Mankato’s Front Street including the Mankato House Block on the 300 block of Front Street, the Martin Building on the 100 block of Front Street, and the Richards Block.
The college suffered setbacks throughout its lifetime, including the rebuilding of the Martin Building after it was destroyed by a fire in 1915, but it largely found success—especially in terms of student job placement—through its hands-on learning approach.
The school closed in 1980 as more affordable options including the Mankato Area Vocational-Technical Institute gained popularity.
